This was the first of the collaborative projects devised for the vU3A pilot group in 2004.
Members were each allocated a number of idiomatic phrases such as ‘money for old rope’ and ‘barking up the wrong tree’ and given free rein to research the origins of these phrases using whatever resources they chose, including of course those of the Internet.
When ready, they submitted their educational and often amusing findings to the whole group by email. In the process, friendships were formed and details exchanged of personal backgrounds, lifestyles, likes and dislikes and so on. The project had brought people together in the traditional U3A mode whereby social interaction, learning and fun go hand in hand.
