A Virtual U3A has to have a place to be a ‘home’ on the Internet. This ‘home’ is what is known as a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).

The reason for using a VLE is to give the vU3A a structure to help it organize its various activities. Establishments using the same system include schools, colleges and universities throughout the world.

The VLE chosen by the Virtual U3A is powered by PBworks (formerly pbwiki) and it is interesting to note that a number of schools and Universities have chosen Pbwiki for their own learning projects. We call the vU3A customisation of PBworks, vU3A Wiki, which then becomes the starting point for all new members of the Virtual U3A.

If you would like to see a little of what our own Virtual U3A pbwiki looks like before signing up to join, visit our demo pages . Here you will get a glimpse of the Front Page, the Sidebar and a few other pages. This version is simply intended to give you a passive idea of how the pbwiki looks. The fully active version can only be accessed by vU3A members. To join up, you will need to complete an application form and pay the subscription.

If you would like a thorough-going generalised introduction to the concept of a wiki and the workings of pbworks, the place to visit is http://pbworks.com/help where you will find the pbwiki manual including detailed notes about its various aspects and features.

Please note that part of the process of taking part in study can involve a procedure of collaborative editing called ‘wikiing’. This process is discussed separately on the present website and should not be confused with the name of our group pages which also include the word ‘Wiki’.
